From The In-Laws: Sansaku Senbei
Eriko’s parents like to send us packages, often with food inside. Here we will explore our latest package, and the goodies contained therein.
Our package this time around contained this gorgeous box, and wouldn’t you know, inside was a bunch of treats!
It’s common for department stores in Japan to wrap up treats all fancy like this!
The treat on the left is Sansaku Senbei, a light cookie with the general texture and feel of a graham cracker, but with a little more snap to it. They come in packs of two, and are thick enough not to completely dissolve in your mouth. Very satisfying.
Eriko translated from their website:
“The design represents the black lilies of Kaga Hakusan and the thunderbirds (grouses) that are said to have inhabited the area in the past. Sweets are made with the blessings of heaven and earth and the harmony of people. This is the reason why we named it Sansaku.”
I don’t know exactly what that means, but it’s a very fancy, well-made, and consistent cookie that’s so light and delicious that it feels like it should be healthy, so I’m going to assume it is. 15/10.
Join us next time as we explore the other half of the box (and one of my favorite treats)!
