Valentine’s Day is fast approaching, and in Japan, that means Gregg gets his treat. One plus of Valentine’s Day in Japan is that boys get gifts from girls, but they don’t have to give them in return for another month! In the lead-up to this just and proper holiday, the big candy makers are rolling out their best stuff. That’s why today, we’re exploring an impressive new chocolate offering: Hershey’s Special Selection.
Hershey’s Special Selection
These high-end Hershey Kisses come in a kiss-shaped golden bag and have a soft filling that is “Enrobed with Milk Chocolate.” Sounds very nice. There were only five or six kisses in each bag, and the shape of the container, though very attractive, actually made it hard to get them out because the area for the opening at the top was so small.
We got two flavors: yogurt and strawberry. Let’s start with the weird one.
Yogurt Hershey’s Special Selection
“Yogurt Hershey’s Kisses” is not a phrase I ever thought I’d write, and yet here we are. This is actually not entirely unprecedented: there is a brand of hard candies called Chelsea that comes in a three-flavored pack with Butter, Coffee, and Yogurt flavors, and while yogurt is my least favorite of these (I usually end up with a bag of yogurt ones after picking out the other two) they are quite good, so I thought maybe these could work.
It was very light, and almost had a minty taste, like a small York Peppermint Patty - the look and consistency was definitely in line with that American treat, but the taste wasn’t exactly the same. It was certainly refreshing, but didn’t taste like yogurt. I’m not sure exactly what it tasted like. If you didn’t tell me this was yogurt flavored, I wouldn’t have known, but I can say I enjoyed them.
“I don’t taste yogurt but very fancy chocolate taste,” said Eriko.
Strawberry Hershey’s Special Selection
The strawberry-flavored ones had a VERY strong taste. I would say I didn’t notice the chocolate on either of these, which could be seen as a good or bad thing, but the strawberry packed a punch. It was delicious and sweet and super powerful, like a really solid pick from a quality box of chocolates. I wouldn’t want to eat too many, but that’s probably a good thing. If you can only eat one Hershey’s Kiss, this would be the one to grab.
The Verdict
We definitely both liked the strawberry ones best. Those are a knock-out, a winner all the way. One might say there’s a reason you don’t see yogurt chocolate in the store every day, but you see strawberry chocolates all the dang time. It’s a good flavor. And compared to the other strawberry chocolates on the market, these hold their own.
Overall, Special Selection is definitely worth trying, since I can’t remember the last time I had a Hershey’s kiss that wasn’t just a normal one - maybe when they added almonds? I dunno 15/10 konbini you do me right.
Can I buy Yogurt or Strawberry Special Selection Hershey’s Kisses in America?
Sadly, it does not appear one can order Hershey’s Special Selection from Amazon in the US, and I don’t see any other Hershey’s Kiss varieties that feature yogurt. However, Hershey’s does offer plenty of strawberry-flavored goodies, so maybe try one of those? Buy them for that special boy in your life on Valentine’s Day!
