You may have seen that we run a weekly post here called Konbini Kinyoubi, where once a week, we go to the convenience store and try some delicious or outrageous food. It may shock you to learn that we sometimes get treats from places OTHER than the konbini, but it’s true. This week, at our local SEIYU, I saw some gourmet chocolates that had been selling for four bucks around White Day now on sale for only a dollar, so I scooped them up. I give you Loacker Tortina.

Diversity!

Diversity!

Aside from the fact that they looked fancy and were formerly expensive, I was intrigued by these because they have hazelnut in them. I love Nutella, and we feasted upon the Hazelnut Black Thunder recently, so I definitely wanted to see how these stacked up.

Some might say these are not Japanese chocolates, and therefore don’t belong on this site. But we ate them in Japan, and that’s good enough for me.

First up: the original. It’s round, wide, and quite short, with a very clear logo on top. Inside is a crisp wafer cookie, along with the hazelnut stuff. The chocolate comes through more than anything, and you can absolutely tell how fancy this chocolate is. It’s rich. I sort of wished it were bigger and had more wafer/hazelnut, but overall very delicious. I would like another.

TRIPPPLE DARK. That’s right, they went right past double and went all the way to triple. This one had more bitter notes, and man was that chocolate strong. I felt weak. It was good, but I’m glad I split it with Eriko because I don’t think I could handle a whole one by myself. I’m a delicate flower. This one is purely for hardcore chocolate fans.

Finally, we had to try the white one because I am a white, white boy. This one, like the Triple Dark, also had really delicious chocolate, and the taste was also overwhelmingly powerful. Out of the three, the original was my favorite and the only one I really wanted to try again because it was the only one where the hazelnut wasn’t dominated by the chocolate and also the only one that didn’t make me collapse onto the couch. Eriko, of course, liked them all.

If you’re a big fan of chocolate, I’d highly recommend Loacker Tortina, especially if you can get it cheap. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I need to exercise so I can pile more sweets into my mouth on Friday.
