Konbini Kinyoubi: Whoopie Pie & Soda from 7-11

Konbini Kinyoubi: Whoopie Pie & Soda from 7-11

Welcome to Konbini Kinyoubi, where every Friday (Kinyoubi), we get something from our local convenience store (Konbini) and review it.

A while back, my wife came home raving to me about a treat she’d recently had, something new at the convenience store that she couldn’t wait to try again. “I got oopie pie!” she exclaimed.

What now?

“Oopie pie!”

Our American readers may understand my cause for alarm, as this sounded awfully like a particularly gross fraternity game that revolves around a cookie or biscuit. This week, we investigate this snack, which may or may not contain some terrifying ingredients.

Says: “Uuuuuuuupii pai!”

It turns out she was talking about “Whoopie Pie,” now available at 7-11 for the incredibly low price of 138 yen. From my research, whoopie pie is a common treat on the East Coast, though not something I’d ever had before. It looks a little like a Moon Pie or a giant macaron or big boy Oreo.

The “bread” of the sandwich is soft, and has an incredibly rich chocolatey flavor, way better than any normal convenience store pastry or donut. The cream is light and fluffy, and doesn’t shoot out the sides when you take a bite. The sprinkles add very little, but overall it’s super delicious. I wanted more as soon as we’d finished. Highly recommend. 15/10. You will not be disappointed.

To go with it, I got a Yuzu & Lemon Soda.

I thought it would be like CC Lemon. I was wrong.

This one was a bit of a disappointment. Some people like the taste of regular seltzer water, but I do not. I think it’s bitter and unsatisfying and too bubbly, and i’d rather have regular water 100% of the time. This soda tastes like seltzer water left over from the 1800s, with a splash of something that’s supposed to resemble fruit flavor. I enjoyed the bubbles as I had a sore throat, but under normal circumstances, I’d never have it again.

Overall, a successful trip to the konbini this week. Join is next Friday for more deliciousness!
